I have to say that the best was getting a text from my dad, who is a long-time woodworker himself, saying that he got “outclassed” in the woodworking gift department this year! Now it’s on to my next gift project for my wife–an oak sewing desk. I enjoyed trying out new techniques like adding the splines and creating the lipped lid, and there were two or three instances where I had to stretch my mind a bit and do some problem solving along the way. This project was a great challenge for me–definitely the most difficult piece I’ve built so far. The box is finished with a beeswax/mineral oil finish. These create shadow lines to help hide any small gaps, and actually the plan recommends having just a tiny bit of wiggle room to help with the final fitting. I spent a lot of time with a shooting board trimming those pieces to fit! Each of the pieces has a 1/8″ roundover on it. The pattern on the lid is 1/4″thick pieces of red oak, walnut, and maple glued onto the plywood top. Then some work with a hand plane to finish cleaning things up. I ended up having to build a jig something like a tenoning jig to hold the lid steady while I trimmed away the remaining wood. At least that was how it was supposed to go–somehow my two dadoes got spaced a bit too far apart, so I had extra wood left on the lids to cut away. Once the box is assembled and the glue has dried, you cut away the top on the tablesaw. The lip for the lid is formed by two dadoes, one on either side of the workpiece, separated by a very thin piece of wood holding the box together. You assemble the box with the plywood top and bottom captured in dadoes. I forgot to take pictures of those boxes before we sent them out. The other four boxes used a simplified pattern made up of nothing but rectangles to save time. The one you see here is my wife’s box, it follows the quilt-top pattern from the original design. I increased the height of the box to provide enough clearance for the tea bags, and I simplified the decorative top pattern for four of the five boxes. I basically just followed the plan with two adjustments. I couldn’t find a tea box plan that I liked, so I just adapted a Woodsmith Magazine plan (August 2010 – Issue 190) I had. When I told her that I was thinking about making her a tea box for Christmas, she said, “Well, you might as well make one for my mom and my sister as well, because they’ll want one, too.” Then I tacked on one for my mother and one for my brother-in-law’s wife, and before I knew it one box had turned into five! My wife really enjoys drinking tea, and up until now she’s been keeping her tea bags in an old shoe box in the cupboard.

Gre calculator1/3/2024 ![]() Examinees may garner a score ranging from 0 to 6, with 6 as the highest mark. Since it tests the ability of the examinee to critically think, to eloquently explain complex concepts, and to strengthen ideas with well-researched references, the essay's score is marked by both a human examiner and an e-rater. How is the GRE Analytical Writing score calculated?Īnalytical writing is evaluated differently from the other measures. Speed and level of difficulty remained crucial factors in the weight of the final score, which was converted from the total raw score through equating. Like in Verbal Reasoning, the scores are based on the number of questions they correctly answer. Quantitative reasoning tests the critical thinking and analytical skills of the examinees by letting them solve mathematical and statistical problems. Using equating, the raw score is transformed into a scale score. The number, speed, and difficulty of the questions they answer are all used to quantify their overall performance. ![]() Verbal reasoning is a test of a candidate's reading comprehension. The questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning are all worth the same point. The performance level of the examinees in a computer-delivered test is measured by the precision of their answers and the efficiency of their time management. (3) What is the scoring method for the computer-delivered test? One may have higher scores in a particular section and lower scores in another section. The results of the sections do not affect each other. Verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning have a score scale of 130–170 in 1-point increments, while analytical writing has a score scale of 0–6 in 0.5 point increments. The table below presents the score scales for the three sections of the Graduate Record Examination: (3) What are the scoring scales for the GRE sections? ![]() To better understand the sections, parts, and markings of GRE, one should be familiar with the scoring patterns. One mark per answer: Each correct answer is worth one point. After answering the first set of questions, the algorithms adjust the level of difficulty of the succeeding section to the performance level of the examinee. In the first section, examinees are provided with questions with medium difficulty as they are assumed to have average knowledge of the topics. Two sections: The test is divided into two sections.Computer-Adaptive: The GRE test has a well-designed algorithm that precisely measures the intellectual capacity of an examinee through their performance level in the first section.Specified Test for a Subject: Examinees take the subject to test their ability for a specific subject they will pursue in a higher education.Three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Two types of test: General Test and Subject Test of GRE.What are the scoring patterns of GRE?Įxaminees may observe these scoring patterns of GRE: The average of the scores will be converted into a scale score. The calculation for the analytical writing measure is slightly different because test takers have to write two essays that a trained reader and an e-rater will examine. Thus, examinees may have varied results regardless of the similarity of the number of questions they answered correctly. ![]() Performance and time management are critical in determining the final score for verbal and quantitative reasoning tests. On the other hand, equating is the process of converting raw scores into scaled scores. Adaptive testing refers to the adjustments to the difficulty of the questions in the second section based on the performance of the examinee in the first section. The calculation involves adaptive testing and equating. The GRE Score Calculator uses scores from mock exams as input to predict an examinee's GRE score on test day. However, there are ways to turn your GRE raw score into a predicted score with the help of ETS’s scoring system and our online GRE score calculator. Most test-takers guess their scores with their gut feelings.

Primary auditory cortex1/3/2024 The primary auditory cortex is subject to modulation by numerous neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, which has been shown to decrease cellular excitability in all layers of the temporal cortex. This location of a pitch-selective area has also been identified in recent functional imaging studies in humans. Studies in the marmoset monkey have shown that pitch-selective neurons are located in a cortical region near the anterolateral border of the primary auditory cortex. The neurons of the auditory cortex of the brain are able to respond to pitch. When each instrument of a symphony orchestra or the jazz band plays the same note, the quality of each sound is different - but the musician perceives each note as having the same pitch. What is known about the human auditory cortex comes from a base of knowledge gained from studies in mammals, including primates, used to interpret electrophysiological tests and functional imaging studies of the brain in humans. The number, location, and organization of fields in the human auditory cortex are not known at this time. The number of fields varies in different species, from as few as 2 in rodents to as many as 15 in the rhesus monkey. Animal studies indicate that auditory fields of the cerebral cortex receive ascending input from the auditory thalamus, and that they are interconnected on the same and on the opposite cerebral hemispheres. The auditory cortex is composed of fields, which differ from each other in both structure and function. There are additional areas of the human cerebral cortex that are involved in processing sound, in the frontal and parietal lobes. The primary auditory cortex is located in the temporal lobe. ![]() The primary auditory cortex lies in the posterior half of the superior temporal gyrus and also dives into the lateral sulcus as the transverse temporal gyri (also called Heschl's gyri). Instead, the auditory cortex forms groupings based on more reliable fundamentals in music, for example, this would include harmony, timing, and pitch. However, there are numerous distortions of sound when reflected off of different mediums, which makes this thinking unlikely. Many have surmised that this linkage is based on the location of sounds. The role of the auditory system is to decide which components form the sound link. In the hearing process, multiple sounds are absorbed simultaneously. Distinguished scientist and musician James Beament puts it into perspective when he writes, “The cortex is so complex that the most we may ever hope for is to understand it in principle, since the evidence we already have suggests that no two cortices work in precisely the same way." When the sound pulses pass into the cortex, the specifics of what exactly takes place are unclear. The auditory cortex is an important yet ambiguous part of the hearing process. Individual cells consistently get excited by sounds at specific frequencies, or multiples of that frequency. ![]() Human brain scans have indicated that a peripheral bit of this brain region is active when trying to identify musical pitch. The auditory cortex is involved in tasks such as identifying and segregating auditory "objects" and identifying the location of a sound in space. There are multiple auditory areas (much like the multiple areas in the visual cortex), which can be distinguished anatomically and on the basis that they contain a complete "frequency map." The purpose of this frequency map (known as a tonotopic map) is unknown, and is likely to reflect the fact that the cochlea is arranged according to sound frequency. Neurons at one end of the auditory cortex respond best to low frequencies neurons at the other respond best to high frequencies. Neurons in the auditory cortex are organized according to the frequency of sound to which they respond best. ![]() Damage to the Primary Auditory Cortex in humans leads to a loss of any awareness of sound, but an ability to react reflexively to sounds remains as there is a great deal of subcortical processing in the auditory brainstem and midbrain. Evidence for this comes from lesion studies in human patients who have sustained damage to cortical areas through tumors or strokes, or from animal experiments in which cortical areas were deactivated by surgical lesions or other methods. As with other primary sensory cortical areas, auditory sensations reach perception only if received and processed by a cortical area.

Culture of indirection communication1/3/2024 ![]() ![]() With regard to the emotional climate surrounding change, awareness of the pre-acquisition climate and possible sub-climates can help predict fluctuations.Ĭultural diversity, as one of the most important characteristics of European community in the framework of the DIALLS project (see Chapter 10.1007/978-8-0_1 for overview), is integral to notions of cultural identity and cultural literacy. With regard to communication, information sharing is essential to ensure day-to-day functions, but interaction is crucial for long-term engagement and motivation. Simultaneously, an emphasis on the post-acquisition organization can help overcome us versus them thinking. ![]() With regard to employee emotions, acknowledging the different levels of emotions and their triggers can help emphasize positivity and alleviate negativity. Managerially, the key elements for creating positive post-acquisition change are the chosen integration strategy and the managerial skills necessary to create the desired positivity. Together, these findings help answer the fundamental question of how to make acquisitions more successful.įor practitioners, the key contribution is in the analytical power of the suggested framework. Third, this study offers a more dynamic view of emotions in an organizational context, also shedding light on how to manage collective emotions following acquisitions. This sheds more light on how and why emotions emerge during change periods, increasing the level of theorization in the field. Second, it considers emotions in a more balanced manner, not as isolated instances but as both individual and collective instances, paying special attention to the relevant emotion triggers. This can help overcome the previous negative bias in the emotion-centric acquisition literature. First, it acknowledges positive emotions. The key theoretical contribution of this study is threefold. A positive emotional climate can improve organizational identification and performance, and thereby facilitate organizational change. It is visible in the predominant collective emotional states that arise through social interaction between organizational members. An emotional climate refers to a socially constructed working atmosphere. According to the findings of this study, a key reason for this evolving nature of emotions is the surrounding emotional climate. However, emotions are dynamic and vary within and between individuals and groups. Previous research has indeed confirmed that communication is a key aspect during integration because social interaction and employee engagement can create a feeling of belongingness to the new organization. According to the findings of this study, a key positivity trigger at work is interactive communication. At work, emotions are triggered by work-related events and can influence work-related behavior. Both individuals and groups can experience them. The empirical evidence that is crucial to abduction arises from an in vivo case study in two different acquisitions, where data collection centers on qualitative interviews and employee surveys.Įmotions in general arise through appraisal-an evaluation of how pleasing or displeasing a triggering event is considered. Taking a slightly unorthodox stance, this study adopts an abductive research structure guided by a moderate constructionist research philosophy in order to build a theory that is closely connected to empirical evidence. Thus, this study sets out to determine how employee emotions influence post-acquisition integration, paying particular attention to positivity in emotions. However, emotions can also be the reason why individuals or organizations thrive. Earlier research on mergers and acquisitions presents emotions as something problematic and negative that must be neutralized or controlled.
